In today's day and age people are starting to develop a more natural way of living. This includes their products. While buying the newest hair mask or moisturizer can always be fun, it is sometimes hard to identify all the ingredients that are going into your products that you are then putting in your hair. The following are five natural remedies you can make at home to get the same results from your favorite leading products while not breaking the bank and keeping your hair safe from harsh chemicals.
1. Dry Hair: Olive Oil, Egg, Lemon Juice
If you are suffering from dry hair, chances are your hair is not retaining its moisture and lacking essential oils. Although many of us hate oily hair, the natural oils our scalp produce are actually key factors to healthy hair growth and healthy hair. Olive oil is a great natural source of essential oil, while it also promotes hair growth and nourishes your scalp. Adding egg increases the productivity of the mask while the lemon juice acts as a soft cleaner for your scalp.

Two tablespoons of lemon juice
Bowl for mixing

Once you’ve collected your ingredients, you should begin with whisking your two eggs.
Add the olive oil and lemon juice to the egg mixture

Once all elements are combined, add mixture to your hair until your hair is fully saturated

Rinse out
Personal Experience
Through all the stress that is college, I definitely had many days when my hair was in extra need of some moisture. Between the many assignments, events, and skipped deep mask treatments, my hair was thirsty for some TLC. I tried this mask and it worked wonders. I actually left it in for about an hour. I personally am a true believer in the long the better. It is a good time to get some cleaning or homework done while the ingredients work their magic. After rinsing my hair with cool water I saw immediate results. I finished my hair off with my Mielle pomegranate and honey leave-in conditioner and my hair was good as new. Aside from the mess it was to apply this mask to my hair I can honestly say it did the job. 8/10
2. Hair Growth: Avocado and Olive Oil
Hair loss can be a result of many different things such as, stress or poor diet. However, this natural hair remedy can help generate hair growth and promote a healthy scalp. Growth is always something I’ve wanted to achieve which led me to this mask, a natural and safe way to speed up the process. The avocado makes for a great texture of the mask, I did not make as much as a mess with applying this one. I saw results of growth and moisture with this mask which was great however, this is a mask you need to use at least once a week to see results. 7/10
3. Shiny/Silky Hair: Yogurt, egg yolk, and Aloe Vera
The texture of yogurt makes for a great binder for a natural hair mask. Yogurt is strong in vitamin B6 and B12 which promote shiny and strong hair. Yogurt is also a good source of lactic acid, potassium and fat which supports shiny hair and helps to treat dandruff as well. Yogurt also seals the hair cuticles and promotes growth to your hair.
What You’ll Need
3 tbsp of yogurt
3 tbsp of aloe vera gel
2 egg yolks
Bowl to mix
Spoon to mix
How to Make
Combine all ingredients into a bowl
Dampen hair as hair and scalp should be wet when applying
Apply mask to hair
Cover with a shower cap
Let sit for 30 mins
Rinse with cold water
Personal Experience
It may not be everyone's goal to have shiny silky hair, and you may think it is hard to really have that texture on curly hair. However, curls can be shiny too! Shiny and silky hair represents healthy hair and makes for styling and product application much more effective. The best way to get healthy hair is to start at the scalp. This mask is great to promote scalp health, although I do not suffer from dandruff, I can get a lot of oil from product build up. This mask was great at clarifying my hair without stripping the natural oils from my scalp and hair strands. 9/10

I love the concept of this post. I have greatly changed the care and attention I put into finding natural, effective curly hair products. I even downloaded this app called Think Dirty which will list out the ingredients for common beauty products and rate them from 0-3 (clean) to 8-10 (dirty). I think it is important to know what you are putting on your hair as your scalp is porous and can absorb the chemicals in products. I want to try the yogurt, egg yolk and aloe vera hair mask. I love that the recipe uses simple ingredients that I already have at home. Product buildup is a challenge for me as well. I love that I could make a…
Hi Erickah!
I was really interested in learning more about your at home hair masks. The one hair mask that really interested me was the hair growth mask. One question that I have is how long should the mask set before rinsing everything out, and how often would you suggest using the mask? Overall, I feel that using any of the masks would be beneficial in my case with some additional moisture and shine with different products that may not have been as beneficial for me in the past! I also was curious if you had any additional information of at home care differences for those coloring hair or could all natural products be alright to use as well?
